Kitchen Update

The kitchen has been 'finished' for a while, so I thought I'd update with some pictures.

Here is just a reminder of what we had to work with... The floors were disgusting!

and after sanding, stain and a coat of polyurethane!

The wall behind the fridge and stove is wrecked, so there was a board covering it, and we decided to pull it off and add beadboard. It will be easier to wipe down and add character. Thomas got to use his new compressor and nail gun.

Our beautiful new dishwasher. It is such an improvement over our old one. I don't have to hand wash dishes anymore! You can see the bottom of the cabinets here are unpainted because they were covered with three layers of linoleum and are now exposed.

So we got the paint matched and added shoe moulding. It's amazing how much of a difference the little things can make.

Here is the disaster of a kitchen, but it was progress!

In these pictures, you can see the quarter round that we added on the baseboards. There was a gap between the floors and the baseboard, so we also added spray insulation to add a little bit of a barrier between us and the outside. We then added the quarter round.

We also added crown moulding. The moulding that was up was simply quarter round.

Here is a picture where you can see the difference between the two mouldings. I love it.

We buy new vent covers when we finish the floors and have these vents throughout the rooms that we have finished. I love the simplicity and the fact that they blend in and don't stand out.

Here is the only 'finished' picture I have of the kitchen so far. I'm in love.

Our kitchen plans still include:
-Hanging artwork
-Adding white shelves over the counters to break up the blue walls
-Build pull out drawers for several of the cabinets. This will allow for better use of the space in our kitchen

Other plans:
-Paint the bathroom (again) and add larger crown moulding
-Paint the ceiling and add crown moulding to the office
-Paint the office closet and ceiling
-I hope to start working on the back entry way. We are going to paint the walls, strip down the woodwork and repaint, put in a new light fixture and hopefully make a built in key hook into the walls
-Continue working and hopefully finish the woodwork in the parlour

Right now, we are just enjoying having a somewhat clean house and the fact that we are not in the middle of a project.

  2. Thank you! We have more plans for the kitchen, but those will happen when the budget is there (counters, backsplash, moving the stove, shelving, under cabinet lighting and much more).

  3. I love going through your blog. It never gets old. Your top pic gave me a flash back of our hall floors as we uncovered the carpet. Ugh!! I was so glad to get that smelly carpet out of the house! I noticed you also have that same color as our house does on the wood trim. It's like a tan-plum-mauve ish color from the early 1990's. How is your boxed beams coming along?

  4. Thank you! :) We had smelly carpet too! We spent several hours before we moved anything into the house tearing it all out. The trim color was horrid. I do not understand what the previous owner was thinking, but I say that about a lot of her choices.

We have finished the beams in the dining room and parlor and just have some finishing touches before we can finish the ones in the living room. We are hoping to get motivated to get back on it this week. We have been doing a lot of outdoor projects lately and need to get back in the house.

Rain Barrels and Chains

The most recent addition to our home: rain barrels and copper rain chains. A couple months ago, we had new seamless gutters installed to replace the plastic do-it-yourself gutters the previous owner had installed. We asked the installers to adapt them to fit rain chains, and installed our copper rain chains a couple weeks later. Before: You can see the many seams that the old gutters had. They all leaked! After: This is the front of the house, but you can see... NO seams! :) The next step was to find a rain barrel to catch the water at the bottom of the rain chains. We shopped online and found out that it would be a lot cheaper to make our own custom rain barrel than to buy one. We called around to wineries and found out that they were only charging $30/full wine barrel!! We bought three wine barrels and cut one in half to use at the base of both of the barrels. This helped get them high enough so that our watering can would fit under the spigot. Here are the rain chains befo

1928 Bungalow Rental Property Update

It has been a whirlwind 6 months and I cannot believe all that is happening in the world. We have been on lockdown in Washington, but have been doing our best to social distance and still get work done. We finished up our 1928 Bungalow and had renters moved in by February 1st. A couple weeks ago, we also purchased another bungalow... but this one is across the street from the previous house and was built in 1910. I will write a separate post for that house! The 1928 Bungalow turned out to be a great purchase! We snagged it for $79,000 and were able to fix it up and get it running for probably close to $20,000. We hope to run the numbers soon to get an exact amount, but we are very happy!  We initially focused on the interior of the house to get it ready for renters and after they moved in, we focused on cleaning up the yard. This house was purchased from an estate. The man had passed away and the family was selling it. The home was smoke damaged from the man smoking and needed

Old House Pictures

I had the chance several months ago to meet up with the second owner's children. Their parents purchased the home in 1928, and lived in it until the late 60's. They were great and were able to find several pictures of the house when they lived in it. These pictures are my motivation to bring this house back to what it used to be. This is a picture of the parlor. It is to the right immediately when you walk in the front door. This picture is in the dining room during Thanksgiving. You can see a lot of the woodwork that we have spent hours stripping paint from. The windows behind the man at the end of the table have not been stripped yet. This is a photo of the backyard during winter. The fence that is in this picture was (mostly) still standing when we purchased the house. We put up a new fence this winter for more privacy and security. This is a picture of the owner's daughter reading on the screened in front porch. They used to sleep out there in the summer. The
