We have been very busy around here lately... The house is a disaster, everything is covered in dust and we cannot wait to be finished with the projects we are working on.
We have been making a storage bed for our bedroom. Because our room is so small, this bed will allow us to store all of our clothes in our room when before we had to store them in armoires in another room.
We also decided to refinish the bedroom floors ourselves. We expected this to be an easy job, but boy were we wrong. We brought home the sander and realized pretty quickly that we would have to strip the floors with a chemical stripper before we could sand. We stripped the floor, used mineral spirits to clean it and then sanded. After we sanded, we used mineral spirits again and stained it using Minwax's Dark Walnut. We are currently applying the poly top coat.
This is the laundry area floor. It has never been finished, but I wanted it to be :) These boards are clear fir. It is not perfect, but I love that they are original. The different wood to the left is where the return air vent used to be... Right under my feet as I did laundry, kinda painful.
Here is the crown molding we installed. We still have to trim with the red paint, but I am very happy with it.
We took down the closet doors in the bedroom and stripped and repainted them. The previous owner had painted them with flat white paint and there were blobs of dripped paint all over them.
These are the drawer fronts. I am so excited for this project to be completed and to be able to move back into our bedroom.
So that is where we are at now... We will have the floors complete tomorrow and I hope to paint the baseboards and add the shoe molding. I will update soon with more pictures. Maybe I will be able to find the camera and stop using my iPhone when we clean things up!

Here is a picture of the floor after most of it had been stripped. These floors are in the worst condition out of all the flooring in the house. A professional would have probably told us they were not salvageable, but I wanted to keep them.
The bottom left corner in this picture has stripper applied on it.
After sanding and filling the divots.

This is the bed frame standing up... You can see how deep the drawers will be. So much storage!

I would not have been able to repaint that door once I found the stain underneath. =)
ReplyDeleteI know! I was talking with my husband about how I felt guilty painting them. I know the purists probably hate me, but we would have to completely replace the baseboards if we wanted to have them match the doors. They are destroyed... Will need a ton of filling from all the years of being mistreated. We are keeping the wood in all the living areas and painting in all the bedrooms and upstairs. From what I've read, a lot of bedrooms in bungalows had painted trim.
ReplyDeleteYes, many bedrooms were painted. Probably most. I just love the look of the stained wood, so we switched. Luckily, we had beautiful old growth fir under the paint.
